Library Descriptions and Challenges
The name of the library, which we are concerned with, is Clayton and it is a county library system. The library began in January 1941 by Jonesboro womenââ¬â¢s club and at that time, it had 200 books only (McCook, 2011). A certain womenââ¬â¢s club rented a room along the old Jones Brothers Department store on south Main Street. The alliance gave permission to citizens of Clayton to be using the books and staff at large. Later in 1964, Jonesboro library was started and around 1966, it opened another branch; the present Jonesboro branch. Around 1967, the Forest Park Branch was opened at Main Street in Forest Park. The next branch was Riverd ale, opened around GA highway 85 near upperà Riverdale Road. Morrow branch followed later in 1975 and it was located on the old Rex Road on a store front. By 1981, the Clayton county libraries had become so successful with the Flint River Regional System and since then, the fame of Clayton County Library System began to increase (McCook, 2011). The headquarters of the library were built in 1988 on Battle Creek and was followed closely by the Morrow branch in 1991, built on Maddox road. Riverdale branch was next and it was built on Valley Hill Road by 1998. The Lovejoy Branch was the 6th and last since then and it was constructed in 2005 on McDonough Road (Bill Melinda Gates Foundation, 2009). Organization and Governance of the Library The Clayton library has clay county board of commissioners with Eldrin Bell being their chairman and the library board of trustees has Judy Serritela as their chairperson (Stockham, 1969). From the chairman, the hierarchy goes down to Carol J Stewar t, who is the chief of staff next to director library services. Next, there are departments of technical service headquarters, community services, youth services, information technology, branch services and collection development headed by various assistant directors. Challenges Facing the Library Funding Problems Most public libraries depend heavily on their local government funding but some proactive librarians have formed alliances with patron and civic groups so as to supplement their financial needs. With the current cost of running local government increasing, libraries are forced to focus ahead of the tax base of the communities they are serving (Irwin, 1964). For example in the United States, libraries in financially strapped communities compete with other public institutions financially. Examples of such institutions include the police, schools and even fire fighters among others. As a strategy of reducing cost and boosting saving, some United States cities; such as New York, San Diego and Philadelphia have reduced their number of employees and service costs simultaneously (Irwin, 1964). The strategies applied by all these cities are; cutting or reducing library funding, closing down numerous branches and reducing working hours and the number of employees in all there branches that were operational (Irwin, 1964). These strategies have greatly affected the library operations in the United States although there are some reports that their return has increased. For instance, a 2008 survey prospected that there is increased funding in the United States libraries, but their growth is still wanting. Various influences have led to a decline of monetary support of public libraries by various governments for entities (Irwin, 1964). A second example of a survey is that of the American library association that has reported a fall of 41 percent in the 2009 budgets for public library funding. As a result of this, most libraries have strained to catch up with cost of upgrading electronic hardware, creation and maintenance among other resource costs. For example while funding was declining or remained the same, the price for printing books and magazines went up (Irwin, 1964). Technological Challenges The internet is modernizing many aspects of lives including public libraries that we use from time to time and more especially the vast and growing information available in the internet that is vital to various academic fields and researches creating a lot of competition for public funding of libraries. Many feel that, if their public libraries were shut down, they would have lost a very important and essential thing that will affect the entire community (Bertot, McClure, Jaeger Ryan, 2008). There have been various efforts during the several past decades to upgrade technology and more specifically internet access so as to enable all citizensââ¬â¢ access the new technologies regardless of their economic status. Libraries also play an essential role in educating school children and the older students like the university students and so they are required to call for active governance so as to position them securely (Bertot, McClure, Jaeger Ryan, 2008). Human Resource Challenge Lack of adequate and competent staff, which can perform the library activities as required can be a major challenge (Jones, 1997). For example, most public libraries are computerized and for one to operate those systems, he or she requires to be computer literate. This poses a lot of challenges to libraries with illiterate or semi-literate computer staff members (Jones, 1997). Discussion by the Local Newspaper Various local newspapers feature various events about Clayton library. For example, in the case of economic down turn, there is need for public library services. The Likely Direction That the Library Will Take First and, the library should ensure that it targets to employ the skilled staff especially on computer latest technology so as to ensure that they go along with new technologies. This staff should be fully informed on what should be happening in the library whether with the use of computers or without. The library should ensure that its number of employees is adequate for the efficient running of activities in the library so as to stop overworking the few employees available, which is likely to reduce the output or lead to poor work being done (Jones, 1999). Financially, the library directors should never rely on funding programs; which are likely to break down at any time. They should look for better alternatives like investing in projects that can benefit them financially. The library should also ensure that it works hand in hand with the community members; these are the people who are readily available to assist the library in various ways as they also benefit from the same libraries. The directors of the various branches should be in competition to ensure each one of them is the best and this way, the library in general will grow all round (Jones, 1999). What the Library Will Look Like In Ten Years to Come If at all the recommended measures are taken by the library officials, geared by their directors, the library will grow to a world class library by ten years to come and it will realize its mission, vision, objectives and goals. The challenges facing the library right now like technological and financial challenges will be far gone by ten years to come. If all these are achieved, the library will stand as one of the best in the world (Jones, 1999). Strategic Plan for the Library The library has got a strategic plan of expanding its services worldwide. This will be possible by opening more branches so as to reach many people in Africa, Asia, and Australia. The library is targeting to stand out as the best worldwide or a world class library (Predeek, 1947). Analysis and Response to the Plan From the various achievements, the library is in a good position to open its branches worldwide because technologically, they are trying as much as possible to be updated. In human resource, they can employ more staff and train them adequately and it will be a better idea to get local people from each area they tend to go and train them because it will cut on costs of transporting them to their work places. At the same time, local people will work better in their ho me countries as compared to foreigners because they will not experience homesick, culture shocks and the likes (Raven, 2006). Generally the library is in a good position to implement the plan. The plan has put into consideration the challenges it is facing, and it has given itself like five years to find solutions to these challenges before proceeding to expand its services globally. Conclusion This library has come up very well since its early ages to date. Its management is still okay regardless of the various challenges that it faces like; financial problems but I believe that with the laid strategies, it is in a good position to rectify the wrongs and implement the rights. Its strategic plans of expanding its services across the world are possible as long as they continue working as one team. Social Worker Essay As the saying goes, ââ¬Å"Our children are our futureâ⬠and who you are as a child can determine who you can be later on in life. It is important for a child to be in a safe, comfortable and loving environment during its development so that the child can have the full advantage to become the best he can be in his future. My future career as a social worker will ensure just that. I chose this profession because of my own history. Growing up, Iââ¬â¢ve had my share of social workers in my house. I experienced them as people who helped my family during a hard time. This is a career where I can fight for peopleââ¬â¢s rights. I will also be able to protect those who are vulnerable and give support to those who need it. I want to be able to have a positive impact on others as social workers have had on my family. According to the Occupational Handbook, there are two different kinds of social workers; ââ¬Å"direct-service social workers who help people solve and cope with problems in their everyday lives, and clinical social workers, who diagnose and treat mental, behavioral, and emotional issues.â⬠My main focus would be children and family. This will fall under the direct-service social worker. The description of this job would be to provide social service and assist improvement of the social and psychological functions of the children and their families. Also I would try to maximize families well-being and childrenââ¬â¢s academic functions. I may be able to do so by assisting parents, arranging adoptions, or by finding foster homes for abandoned children or in any dangerous situation the children may be in. If the child was removed and the danger has been address, I may also work to help unify the family. I may act as an advisor, an advocate or even just a listener and to do my best to make sure they have the best option available for them. Overall I work and support the children and families to find and develop long lasting solutions. Iââ¬â¢ve learned from the Occupational Handbook that a bachelorââ¬â¢s degree inà social work is required. But also, in many cases you may be able to become employed by having a similar degree such as psychology or sociology. As of now I am currently enrolled in LaGuardia community College majoring in psychology. My plan is to transfer to Hunter College to get my bachelorââ¬â¢s degree. However, I do not plan to end there. Iââ¬â¢ve learned that in the state of New York, a competitive and demanding need for social workers, a bachelor degree may not be enough to earn a successful position. I plan to complete my masterââ¬â¢s in social work (MSW). From what Iââ¬â¢ve learned on the Occupational Handbook, ââ¬Å"a degree in almost any major is acceptableâ⬠to enter the MWS program. This means that with my bachelorââ¬â¢s in psychology I would be able to get in the program. In the MWS program it may take an additional two years to complete and in the state of New Yo rk it also requires a license (LMSW) as well to become a social worker. After all the hard work and challenges I may face academically, Iââ¬â¢ve learned that I may also face emotional challenges once I have my foot stepped into the career. Although I believe I have an emotionally strong personality, this career as a social worker still can be stressful. As my responsibility to make decisions about the welfare of the children and families, I may be faced with difficult situations such as not being able to help everyone in the way I hope. Some of my clients or cases may be stuck because of obstacles created by the legal system, courts, schools or other kinds of institutions. Because of this there can be times when there is really little that I can do. In cases like this, it can become really frustrating and emotionally challenging for myself. In other cases, some people may not want my help. Since I cannot control how client behaves I am still mandatory to give them the tools and recourses they need and then move on to the next person who needs my help. As current social worker, Amy Dogenske, she says ââ¬Å"sometimes they donââ¬â¢t want us to be there but in the end you see changes in the parents and kids.â⬠As of now I must have my mind set that I cannot go down expecting to resolve everything all at once. It can be frustrating, but I must learn that I have to be patient, and that the reward of feeling satisfied with my job will come my way because the positive changes in the kids and families is what my job is all about. It is very easy to become engaged in helping others, but there must be a line between my job and my personal life. According to Amy Dogenske, she emphasizes how important it is to have ââ¬Å"self care and take time for your self.â⬠In this profession I may deal with many cases with unimaginable crisis and it is important for me to know to leave my work at the office everyday. In doing so it will allow me to rejuvenate and return to the job without burning myself out. As Iââ¬â¢ve mentioned before, I have a personal history with social workers. They have helped my family and I through difficult situations and I want to be able to return the favor to the society. Although I am in no longer in need of the assistance of social workers I still believe that in pursuing this career it may still help me in other forms. I believe this career can allow me to gain a lot of insight and personal growth. I believe once I start to experience some of the cases I may be assigned to, ill be able to see sometimes what other people miss by getting a look beneath the surface of someoneââ¬â¢s life. I believe Iââ¬â¢ll be able to cultivate qualities like compassion and insight through working with the clients who are less fortunate. I also believe that when I help others deal with their struggles, I will be able to gain opportunity to learn more about my own beliefs and values, which will enable me to grow more as a person. I cannot imagine a more rewarding job than social work. Being able to go home and know that I may have made a difference in someoneââ¬â¢s life; a child, the whole family, or in extreme cases actually saving a life is a privilege that not many careers are able to experience. As a social worker, working with the children and families, using the knowledge and skills that I will have learned and develop, to listen, suggest and assist. Sometimes I will be taking in hard decisions, celebrating achievements or just being useful until there is a point when I am not needed anymore, thatââ¬â¢s the most rewarding bit of it all. My Philosophy of Teaching :: Philosophy of Education
Philosophy of Education Deciding what you want to do for the rest of your life is a very important and hard decision. But for me, this decision was not hard at all because ever since I was a young child, I have always wanted to become a teacher. Many people find it amusing when I tell them of my aspirations of becoming a teacher, and they respond by saying that the only reason why I want to be a teacher is because my parents are both teachers. I respond to them by describing what teaching means to me and tell them what I could bring to the teaching professional to enhance it. To me, teaching is such a rewarding career because you have the ability to shape the minds of the future. But with this rewarding career also comes many responsibilities. As a teacher you must be able to realize all the needs of your students and be able to accommodate these needs. I think that this is one of the most important things that teachers must achieve. They should be able to teach not only to the smartest child in the classroom, but also to the slowest child in their classroom. Another very important part of being a teacher is the impression that you make on your students. For many children, their only role model is their teacher. So I believe that as a teacher you must strive to make a positive impact on your studentââ¬â¢s lives. When children are young, they are not always taught what is right from wrong. They model the behavior in which they see. If a child sees you as a teacher being caring, loving, and respectful to others then they will in treat other s in the same way that you did. I know that many of my teachers had this impact on me, and I only hope that some day I can have that impact on a child. When looking at the different philosophies of education I realized that I do not want to just be a Progressivist, I also want to be a Behaviorist and an essentialist. This is due to the fact that I like different aspects of each philosophy, and I believe if I could tie them all together then I would have a successful classroom.

Difference and Similarities in Browning’s poetry
In these poems Browning gives us an insight into minds corrupted by jealousy. Discuss how Browning makes effective use of the dramatic monologue to reveal the characters of the narrators, and shock the readers. Which did you find most shocking and why? A dramatic monologue is s type of poem. It is like a speech which reveals a character's thought and feelings. The poet takes on the role of this character and speaks as them. All dramatic monologues are written in the first person. The effect of this is to make the poem more personal. Robert Browning wrote his monologues in the 19th Century. ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠was set in 14th Century in Italy in a patriarchal society. ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠was set in 19th Century in England and lastly ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠was set in 18th Century in France. Robert Browning's poems were popular because in the Victorians times it was a patriarchal society and the people who lived in the Victorian times were very strict and also had a restricted life. Therefore reading this in those times would have been especially strange and unusual to read about psychotic people killing their loved ones. The first similarity is that the three poems have disturbed narrators who treat their lovers as a possession. In ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠we know this when he tells us: ââ¬Å"Give herself to meâ⬠this tells us that he only wants her to himself and no one else whereas in ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠we know this when he tells us: ââ¬Å"since none puts by the curtain I have drawn for you but Iâ⬠this tells us that he is possessive even after her death but in ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠the narrator tells us that she wants to poison two females but also wants the king to suffer by saying: ââ¬Å"He is sure to remember her dying faceâ⬠this tells us that even though she doesn't want him dead she wants him to suffer as much as the two female who will be poisoned. In addition another similarity is that all three poems the three narrators don't have any sense of guilt for what they have done. They also think they have gotten away with the murder and that they didn't do anything wrong or need to regret for anything. In ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠he tells us: ââ¬Å"and yet God has not said a word.â⬠This tells us that he thinks that he hasn't done anything wrong because he has not been punished by God yet. In ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠he tells us: ââ¬Å"Will't please you rise? We'll meet the company below.â⬠This shows us that he's got no emotions, he's controlling and has a normal tone and relaxed about what he has done. In ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠she doesn't feel any guilt for what she is doing and for what she is just about to do, we know this by: ââ¬Å"And her breast and her arms and her hands, should drop dead!â⬠this shows us that this is the way she wants her death to look like; she says this in a childish way and also like a child getting really excited. Another similarity is that the narrator in ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠don't have any sense of guilt for what they have done. They also think they have gotten away with the murder and that they didn't do anything wrong or need to regret for anything. In ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠he tells us: ââ¬Å"and yet God has not said a word.â⬠This tells us that he thinks that he hasn't done anything wrong because he has not been punished by God yet. In ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠he tells us: ââ¬Å"Will't please you rise? We'll meet the company below.â⬠This shows us that he's got no emotions, he's controlling and has a normal tone and relaxed about what he has done. Lastly, another similarity is that all narrators choose not to communicate with their lovers and they never let them know what is wrong. In ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠the Duke tells us: ââ¬Å"I choose never to stoopâ⬠this tells us that he will never get down and communicate with the Duchess. In ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠the lover tells us: ââ¬Å"When no voice repliedâ⬠this tells us that he has the power and that he didn't want to answer her, this also tells us that he wants to have the power so that she has to please him. There are also differences between the characteristics of the narrators in the three poems. The first difference is that the victims were all murdered in different ways. In ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠the duke does not commit the crime himself but give a small command and the murder is committed, we can see this when the duke says: ââ¬Å"I gave commandsâ⬠this tells us that he gave the command and the order was carried out without discussing about it. In ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠the killer murders the lover using the victim own hair and tells us that the victim was in no pain, we can see this when he tell us: ââ¬Å"And strangled her. No pain felt she. I am quite sure she felt no painâ⬠this tells us that he strangled her and that she felt no pain, he also reassures the readers that the victim felt no pain. In ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠the victims are killed using the poison that was made in front of her at the apothecary, we can see this when she says: ââ¬Å"Sure to taste sweet, is that poison too?â⬠this tells us that she thinks that revenge tastes sweet. Another difference is that the woman in ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠is more sexually active and makes the first move, we can see this when the narrator tells us: ââ¬Å"She put my arm around her waist, And made her smooth white shoulder bareâ⬠this tells us that she appears seductive and she's aware of her power. Where as in ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠the Duchess was much more modest and faithful, we can see this when the Duke tells us: ââ¬Å"She had a heart-how shall I say?â⬠this tells us that the Duchess was loyal to the Duke and did not always appear sexually active towards him or others. Another difference is that in all two of the poems ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠and ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠they both have a reason for jealousy were as in ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠he does not have a reason to be jealous. In ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠the lover had a reason to be jealous because she had another man, we know this by: ââ¬Å"one so pale for love of herâ⬠this tells us that she had another lover whilst she was with this lover and also in ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠the narrator tells us that the king has another lover, we know this when she says: ââ¬Å"He is with herâ⬠this tells us that the king was with another lover at the same time as he was with the narrator whereas in ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠there is no reason for the Duke to murder his wife as she is not being unfaithful to him but just being friendly and also appreciate for the presents she gets from others, we know this by: ââ¬Å"The bough of cherries some officious fool broke in the orchard for her â⬠¦. Or blush at leastâ⬠this tells us that she would blush from a present given to her from anyone; she did so because she wanted to be kind and friendly. In this poem there are different motives for each of the psychotic killers to murder. In the first poem the motive for murdering his wife in ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠is that the Duke only kills his wife because she gives innocent smiles when she's being offered a present but this is only because she has good manners and wanted to be kind and friendly, we can see this by: ââ¬Å"The bough of cherries some officious fool broke in the orchard for her â⬠¦.. Or blush at leastâ⬠this tells us that the Duchess got murdered because of a harmless smile given to the person offering her a small gift of cherries whereas in ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠the narrator has a motive because his lover has another man, we can see this when he tell us: ââ¬Å"one so pale for love of herâ⬠this tells us that the lover even though she has the killer as a lover she still had another lover but we do not know if she loved the lover as much as she loved the killer. In ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠the narrator also has a motive which is that the king had another lover whilst he had the narrator, we can see this by: ââ¬Å"He is with her; and they know that I knowâ⬠this tells us that the king has another lover and they both know that the killer knows but aren't really being bothered about her knowing. In all three poems the narrators don't feel guilty about the crimes they committed. We can see this in the poem ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠he tells us: ââ¬Å"and yet God has not said a word.â⬠This tells us that he thinks that he hasn't done anything wrong because he has not been punished by God yet. In ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠he tells us: ââ¬Å"Will't please you rise? We'll meet the company below.â⬠This shows us that he's got no emotions, he's controlling and has a normal tone and relaxed about what he has done. The way the victims' murder is described is horrifying as he describes it in a harsh way. We can see this by: ââ¬Å"In one long yellow string I wound three times her little throat around, and strangled herâ⬠this is a very harsh way to describe the death as the reader can picture the death in their minds. I feel that each of the narrators in the three poems is psychotic as their motives for killing the lovers is very poor. In ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠I feel that the narrator is very psychotic as he only wanted the lover for him and killed her just so she can belong to him only and cannot find someone else, we can see this when he says: ââ¬Å"In one long yellow string I wound three times her little throat around, and strangled herâ⬠. In ââ¬Å"My Last Duchessâ⬠I feel that the narrator is also psychotic as he killed his wife because of an innocent smile this is very disturbing we can see this when he says: ââ¬Å"I gave commands and all smiles stopped togetherâ⬠. Lastly, in ââ¬Å"The Laboratoryâ⬠I feel that the narrator is psychotic because of the way the death of the two women are described and how she wants their death to be, we can see this when she says: ââ¬Å"And her breast and her arms and her hands, should drop dead!â⬠In conclusion I think that Browning used dramatic monologues to explore these three characters because this is the poem in which the poet takes on the role of the narrator and speaks of them. I don't think that the poem would have been powerful in third person because using first person makes the poem more personal and it makes the reader think that the poem is talking to the reader himself. I think that the most shocking poem would have been ââ¬Å"Porphyria's Loverâ⬠because in this poem the narrator describes harshly about the death of the lover and how he killed the lover with her hair and used this as a weapon and also I feel it is quite shocking when he tries to reassure the reader that the victim did not feel any pain.
